It is suggested to use this cleaner as a preventative solution every 3 to 6 months depending on the quality of your water and frequent usage of the steamer. Three 10 ounce bottles per package. Well.We don't have terrible hard water, just around about 170ppm but since the two years we have the steamer we never cleaned it.We have a j2000 and it worked great.Over time the steam seems to get less and it also made a "sound" like it is starving water.I took the water bottle off and looked inside with a flashlight.Right on top of the bottom there was white grayish "goo" that I could move with my fingers and was be able to flush out with fresh water.However, inside the "pipe" there was a hard whitish coating that didn't move. I got this cleaner and have to say that right after a few minutes the hard stuff flaked away. I left it in for about 3 hours then I shaked and rinsed the unit a few times and there was plenty of flakes coming out. Even with out ok water there was plenty that came out.What should I say, the steamer is steaming like there is no tomorrow.There is also almost no noise during steaming, an welcome side effect.I can wholeheartedly recommend this cleaner.
